Las Vegas and a Sudden End

I received a call from my next door neighbor telling me Sarah was in the Emergency room....I knew I there were three things I had to do:

Talk to Sarah and let her know I was on the way home
Find the nearest airport to get home
Make sure I got Bill home to Portland safe and made arrangements with Dot (Bill good friend and neighbor) pick him up.

I looked on the map and saw Las Vegas was only a couple of hours away. I knew that I could get a flight anywhere easy from that city. So this blog and great trip ends abruptly a few miles form the California border. Will we ever make it back this way to complete the trip? Who knows...

Ghost Town III

The Shootout....

There are even jackasses in Oatman...

Ghost Town II

Bill and I find a....bar! & a wall full of cash....

Ghost Town...

We decided it was time to visit and good old ghost town.  Oatman is one of the west's historic gold mining town that went bust but now is a major tourist attraction on the RT 66 trail. The drive there passes through mountain passes as you cruise into the town.  The main street is lined with shops and restaurants. Wild burros, descendants of those brought by long ago miners, wander the streets. Gunshots are heard as the Ghostrider Gunfighters perform daily, displaying blazing six-gun shootouts in the middle of main street.

The Town of Kingman

The Heart of Historic Route 66

Kingman, the Heart of Historic Route 66 & one of the hidden treasures of Arizona, is conveniently located on Interstate 40 and is the perfect launching point for "Route 66 and Beyond." Scenic hiking, historic charm, great cafes and restaurants, and the allure of Route 66 combine to make Kingman a remarkable destination.
The roots of Arizona are captured by the Historic Route 66 Museum, Army Airfield Museum, and the Mohave Museum of History and Arts that recount the travels on Route 66, depict the World War II era and the early days of railroading, mining and ranching. At an elevation of around 3,300 feet Kingman

Kingman just the place the kick the duct off our boots and settle down an explore. We got in and to it was 105 degrees! We found ourselves a nice Best Western and took it easy. The drives take their toll.
today, rest, tomorrow the Ghost Town of Oatman.

The lonely road...

Hankberry Az

On the way to Kingman we decided to stop at what is known as a RT 66 Historic Store.
Welcome to our collection of roadside memorabilia. Take some time to peruse the many maps, books, signs and artifacts relating to historic Route 66, and be certain to sign the guest book. Meet “Max”, our lovable, friendly rescue dog. He has been featured in TV commercials for Harley-Davidson motorcycles and United Airlines in the U.S. and on television shows in Holland and Germany on the international scene. Pet him and receive an energetic wag of his tail.

Hackberry General Store is a museum of old Route 66 and has been called the “mother lode of mother road memorabilia”. No gas is sold but vintage pumps stand outside the Mobil gas Pegasus leaps from the roof and the Greyhound dog welcomes bus travelers.
